The PLEX-ID Food-Borne Bacteria assay is a qualitative, non-diagnostic assay intended for the detection and identification of several common food-borne bacteria including E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, and Listeria, through nucleic acid amplification and subsequent mass spectrometry analysis.
*Magnetic beads and clean-up reagents are included with the T5000 assay but must be purchased separately for use with the PLEX-ID assay.

The PLEX-ID Food-Borne Bacteria assay uses eight primer pairs multiplexed into eight wells to detect and identify the following:
- Detects over 250 members of Salmonella enterica species complex
- Differentiates seven major Salmonella enterica subspecies: Type I (Enterica), Type II (Salamae), Type IIIa (Arizonae), Type IIIb (Diarizonae), Type IV (Houtenae), Type V (Bongori), Type VI (Indica), and Type VII (UNKNOWN)
- Differentiates Salmonella enterica subspecies into serotype clusters, e.g. Newport, Enteritidis,typhimurium, typhi, paratyphi, Saintpaul, Heidelburg, etc.
- Detects E. coli species and differentiate E. coli O55:H7 and O157:H7 from other E. coli serotypes
- Detects and differentiates Shigella species like S. boydii, S. dysenteriae, S. flexneri, and S. sonnei
- Detects Listeria species and differentiates Listeria monocytogenes from Listeria species like L. innocua, L. ivanovii, L. seeligeri, and L. welshimeri
Due to the large genetic diversity of Salmonella enterica, the current assay cannot be directly used for serotyping this group.
